The New England Folk Network was created in May 2007, out of a desire to connect New England regional folk performers and venues with each other, and to provide the public with a set of resources so that they may better support these artists and venues.
The only change in the listings format in 2011 is that I am no longer accepting any submissions without a website. Your potential audience is best served by seeing and hearing you on a decent commercial website, and I cannot vet you without one. I don’t accept private Facebook pages, and I’m close to deciding against MySpace. We’ll see how that goes....
If you do have a listing you think is appropriate – for yourself, your folk music organization, or for a venue you like to go to – you may send your links via the “Get Listed” button on the left.
All potential listings will be vetted. Listees must be:
- New England-based. That is, the artist, venue, festival, radio station, or organization is located in one of the following states: Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island.
- Anglo-American-oriented. That is, primarily performing or presenting folk music that has its roots in the Anglophone cultures of England, Canada or the United States.
- Musical. This site is for folk music only.
- Folk. Folk music has long relied on oral/aural transmission, which lends to its accessibility and popularity in informal social situations. For purposes of this website and this website only, I define “folk” as acoustic-based non-theatrical vocal or instrumental music created and/or performed without reliance on a classically or academically trained musical background; also, the subsequent evolutions of this music.
Though they are Folk Music, this website will not include listings for musicians or presenters that specialize primarily in Blues, Bluegrass, Cajun, Celtic, Irish, World, or Zydeco. These are not the focus of this site, and due to their current popularity, there are many other websites that do cater to them.
However, the reality of the entertainment market does not allow for unbending idealism! Festivals, radio stations, camps, clubs and other venues serving a wide audience will be listed as long as they offer a generous amount of Anglo-American folk music.
A Note on Updates: pages are updated individually, as a listing is added, changed, or deleted. The update on this homepage does not reflect updates on other pages.
